New York City, Harvard Club, August 23, 2011: Looking to send a message to Washington, former New York City Mayor Ed Koch and leading New York City businessman John Catsimatidis joined forces in the September 13, 2011 special election to replace former Congressman Anthony Weiner who recently resigned.
The Mayor and Catsimatidis are supporting the Republican candidate in the race. If the Republican were to win in this heavily Democratic district, which includes parts of the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn, it would be a major upset and perhaps become a national bell weather for the 2012 presidential elections.
Catismatidis said, “Mayor Koch wants to send the message that the President cannot throw Israel under the bus and get a pass, while I have the same complaint about the business community. Robert Turner is a qualified candidate with a solid chance to win. His election will put the White House on notice that there will be no more rubber stamp Democrats sent to Congress.”
The luncheon the Harvard Club drew Party officials from across the City. New York State Republican Chairman Ed Cox told the group, ‘the nation is watching this race and we are putting all our resources into the campaign.’
