–Germany Should Pay its Long-overdue Obligations to Greece

We request the repayment of the German reparations in Greece, as aroused from the occupation loan and the atrocities that were committed during the Second World War.
“In October 1940, Greece was forced to enter the Second World War with the unprovoked invasion of the troops of Mussolini in Epirus. Hitler in order to rescue Mussolini from a humiliating defeat invaded Greecein April 1941.
Greece was ravaged and ruined by the Germans more than any other country under their possession. According to the International Red Cross, at least 300,000 Greeks died of starvation- a direct result of German looting.
Mussolini complained to the Foreign Minister, Earl Ciano, ‘Germans have seized from Greeks even the laces of their shoes.’
Germany and Italy imposed on Greeceexorbitant costs of occupation, but a forced loan (occupation loan) of 3.5 billion dollars as well. Hitler himself had acknowledged the obligation ofGermanyto pay this debt and had given instructions so as to begin the process of payment.
After the war, the Conference of Paris adjudicated to Greece7.1 billion dollars for war reparations against to the Greeks’ claim for 14.0 billion U.S. dollars.
Italy paid to Greece their share of the occupation loan.Italy and Bulgariapaid war reparations to Greece, and Germany paid war reparations to Poland in 1956 and Yugoslaviain 1971.Greecehas demanded the payment of the occupation loan from Germanyin 1945, 1946, 1947, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1974, 1987 and 1995.
Nevertheless,Germany has consistently refused to pay their obligations under the occupation loan and war reparations. In 1964, the German Chancellor Erhard promised to pay the loan after the Germany’s unification which held in 1990.
Indicative of the current value of the German obligation toGreeceis the following:
if an interest is used as an average interest on U.S.treasuries from 1944 to 2010, which is about 6%, the present value of the occupation loan amounts to 163.8 billion dollars and the war reparations to 332 billion dollars.
On July 2, 2011, the French economist and adviser to the French Government Jacques Delpla said that the debts of Germany to Greecefor World War II amounted to 575 billion dollars (Les Echos, Saturday, July 2, 2011).
The German historian of economics Dr. Albrecht Ritschl recommended to Germany to pursue a more moderate policy during the European crisis of 2008-2011, because they may face legitimate claims for war reparations of World War II (Der Spiegel, June 21, 2011, guardian.co.uk).
Germans have not only seized from Greeks “even the laces of their shoes”. During World War II, Greece lost 13% of the population. A part of this population perished in the battle but the highest percentage died of hunger and war crimes of the Germans.
Germans murdered the inhabitants of 90 Greek towns and villages, burned more than 1.700 villages and executed many of the inhabitants of these villages. They turned the country into ruins and looted archaeological treasures.
We ask from the German government to fulfill their obligations to Greece which are pending for several decades by paying the forced occupation loan and the war reparations proportionate to the damages, crimes and depredations that Greece suffered from the German war machine”.
