Letter for Financial Times
The following letter in r is written in the interest of democracy, human rights, and justice, ideas that have been completely abandoned by pro-Turkish manipulators such as the aforementioned Mr. Duff.
It is rather ironic for the Greeks of Cyprus to be accused of prejudice from a British Representative considering the destructive, oppressive, and tyrannical role that London played in Cyprus when it systematically undermined the Greek Cypriot freedom fighters in 1955 that sought to achieve union with Greece.
The British at the time responded with repressive and authoritarian tactics to the aspirations of the Cypriots which began with peaceful referendums, while the British encouraged Ankara to put forward expansionist claims on Cyprus (a historically Hellenic island with an overwhelmingly Greek majority).
It is not surprising that British officials continue to support the destructive policies that opened the door for conflict in Cyprus and which culminated in the brutal Turkish invasions of 1974.
Turkey is guilty of ethnic cleansing and war crimes in Cyprus. Over 200,000 Greek Cypriots have been deprived of their homes and rights as a result of the racist Turkish invasion. Greeks everywhere are aware of the continued involvement of the British in Cyprus such as the English thieves who have stolen Greek Cypriot homes and properties in the occupied territories, and Mr’s Blair’s role in defending the unscrupulous elements who have benefited from the misfortunes of other human beings.
Mr. Duff has evidently taken a break from reality. The United States and Israel have begun to see the light on Turkey, and recognize that Turkey is a an aggressive and destabilizing influence in the Middle East and Eastern Meditteranean.
The Republic of Cyprus four years ago assisted in the evacuation of over 15,000 American citizens who fled the fighting in Lebanon.
More recently, the internationally recognized government of Cyprus refused to permit the Turkish flotilla to depart from the territory it controls, in contrast to the Turkish occupied regime under Ankara’s control which provoked an international incident.
The Republic of Cyprus is a genuine democracy with real moral and strategic significance, in addition to being the victim of Turkish aggression (with the connivance of the British).
Mr. Duff endorses the British tradition of appeasement.
