AHEPA Condemns Act of Hate Speech Directed toward Greek-Canadian Community of Montreal
Washington, DC.- The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) condemns an act of hate speech directed toward a Greek-Canadian community. The offensive message, “GO HOME GREEK,” is spray-painted on the doors of St. Lawrence Anglican Church, LaSalle, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal.
“We condemn the act of hate speech and vandalism that conveyed an intolerant and discriminatory message toward the Greek Canadian community of Montreal and its surrounding neighborhoods and defaced a church,” Supreme President Anthony Kouzounis and Canadian President George Vassilas said in a joint statement.
“Simply stated, it is unacceptable, as is all forms of hate speech directed toward any individual, group, or community. It is an eerie reminder that the acts of bigotry, intolerance, and hatred experienced by our immigrant forebears in early twentieth century America still exist in today’s society, unfortunately.
“We call for the perpetrators of this terrible act to be brought to justice by the proper authorities.”
